Clinton as the Candidate of Solutions

The Hillary campaign has rolled out a new theme, Hillary is all about solutions. It is an interesting tack I suppose, but it begs the question, prove it?

This is particularly hard to argue when you look at their track record for finding solutions to things that rank high on the Democratic platform. They reformed welfare, not a high priority for Democrats at the time.

They balanced the budget, kudos on that.

They got NAFTA done, it was a trade deal not a soltution for anything. I am not opposed to trade, but assigning authority to anonymous and arbitrary arbiters is offensive to me. Not only that but not bringing labor and environmental agreements to bear on NAFTA was troublesome. Globalization COULD be a good thing for Americans in general if the government and business community got serious about the work of improving education from k-12 to university research to skills training for adults. Without that emphasis and any concern for the labor rights or environmental protections of our trading partners, it has become very damaging to the stability of our workforce.

Don't ask don't tell, hardly a solution to that problem.

They did well on the international stage, bin Laden and Rawanda being the exceptions. Our standing in the world was strong, the Dayton accords and so on.

Republican domination in Congress, led to the mess we are in now in general.

I just don't see a long record of solutions when I look back at the Clinton years, do you?
